Important Information: School is Cancelled on Friday, April 27

Dear Cherry Creek Schools Community,

I am writing to let you know that the Cherry Creek School District is cancelling school on Friday, April 27, due to an anticipated shortage of teachers that day.

Cancelling school is not a decision I take lightly. However, we are aware of a large number of Cherry Creek teachers who are planning to join their colleagues from across the state at a rally at the capitol to call for increased education funding. We already have more than 1,400 teachers who are taking leave time that day to participate in the rally.

With nearly half of teachers out, the district is not able to deliver on our promise of safe schools and rich learning environments for all children. Therefore, we are making the decision to cancel school a week in advance to give parents more time to plan.

The Colorado Education Association has organized the rally next Friday to call for more money for education. Colorado ranks near the bottom when it comes to per pupil funding and there is a growing movement of educators and parents in the state calling for change.

Please note, April 27 remains a work day for all Cherry Creek Schools staff members. Leave time must be appropriately used if employees are not at work that day.

I recognize that closing school is an inconvenience and a burden for families and I thank you for your patience regarding this matter. I also think it is worth recognizing that our teachers are taking personal time to advocate for what they believe will provide for a brighter future for all of our students.

Sincerely,
Harry Bull
